“Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go to work.”
– Stephen King, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft.
In a way, this blog encompasses that quote. This is my way of just getting up and going to work with my writing. The looming deadline of publishing something every week forces my hand. Sometimes, when I am inspired, I can knock out a half-dozen blog posts in an afternoon, and walk away feeling like I’ve done my best work. But if you hadn’t noticed, there’s a Monday every week, and I’ve committed to a blog post every Monday.
This Monday was exceptionally difficult. Last week’s post wasn’t my best stuff, frankly, and I had a pretty rough week at my day job. If there ever was a week that reflected the opening lines of Dickens A Tale of Two Cities, it was last week.
Today didn’t lend itself to writing. I awoke with a cold. I also had a very busy schedule planned for today. My phone decided to blow up while I was in meetings this morning, so I spent what little unscheduled time I had responding to phone calls. I still haven’t processed my email all the way through. And frankly, I’m uninspired.
But I’m not an amateur. So here’s a blog post for today. And I’ll see you next week.
