At one time, I ran a blog called Fitterverse: A universe of fitness. This post originally appeared there. Thanks to the Wayback Machine, I’ve been able to recapture the text. I’ve published them here on their original publication dates.
This is Seamus, the latest addition to the Fitterverse family. He’s a hound mix about seven months old, and 50 pounds. As you can see he’s a bundle of energy. We’re thinking of starting a new breed, the Georgia Napping Hound.
In spite of Seamus’ low energy levels, he’s brought some improvements to my workouts. (No, I’m not kidding.)
Since we live in a subdivision in the Atlanta suburbs and don’t have a fenced yard, Seamus has to be walked a couple times a day. I walk every morning for cardio anyway, so it was easy to take him along. (Though we’re going to be doing some serious leash training.) Walking with him is more pleasant than walking by myself with the music going. He makes me more attentive to my surroundings.
The other way he’s helped with fitness in our household is this – my girlfriend has started walking him in the afternoons or early evening, and I tend to go with them. She’s getting more unscheduled cardio, and so am I!
I also play with him in the mornings while the coffee is brewing before we walk. Not sure if that counts as another 10 minutes of cardio, but it does get the heart rate up!
