I listen to a lot of punk rock.
During my workout, while listening to Dead Kennedy’s Holiday in Cambodia, I realized that Donald Trump is a punk rock song.
Punk rock uses hyperbole, sometimes to the point of the ridiculous, to indicate that’s something is really, really wrong. California Über Alles posits a Jerry Brown presidency where the “California vibe” is enforced by fascist secret police. Black Flag’s Six Pack talks about how great it is to be an alcoholic. Fear’s Let’s Have a War illustrates the great reasons to go to war. From the same album, I Love Livin’ in the City details all the wonders of living in the city.
Donald Trump is exactly the same. The ridiculous hyperbole that comes out of his mouth, and the fact that he actually factors into the polls at all, illustrates that something’s very, very wrong.A few examples:
- Misogyny – “Look at that face! Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president?! I mean, she’s a woman, and I’m not s’posedta say bad things, but really, folks, come on. Are we serious?”
- Racism
- “I will build a great wall — and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me —and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will make Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words.”
- “Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.”
- “Our great African American President hasn’t exactly had a positive impact on the thugs who are so happily and openly destroying Baltimore!”
- “They’re going to build a plant and illegals are going drive those cars right over the border. And they’ll probably end up stealing the cars.”
- Anti-veteran
- “He’s not a war hero. He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured, OK, I hate to tell you.”
- Outright lies
- “There were people that were cheering on the other side of New Jersey, where you have large Arab populations. They were cheering as the World Trade Center came down.”
- “You take this little beautiful baby, and you pump — I mean, it looks like just it’s meant for a horse and not for a child, and we’ve had so many instances … [in which] a child, a beautiful child went to have the vaccine, and came back and a week later had a tremendous fever, got very, very sick, now is autistic.”
If you take every word that comes out of Trump’s mouth and put it to music, you’ve got a punk rock song, full of hyperbole illustrating that something is very, very wrong. You should treat it like a punk rock song. Listen to it, hear the message, and make sure that it doesn’t happen.
