Do you even lift?

At one time, I ran a blog called Fitterverse: A universe of fitness. This post originally appeared there. Thanks to the Wayback Machine, I’ve been able to recapture the text. I’ve published them here on their original publication dates.


bro-do-you-even-lift-armsThis meme needs to go away, as does all the judgmental crap that goes on in the gym.

Why? Because we’re all there for different reasons, with different goals, at different stages. That guy with the spaghetti arms? It’s his first day. The girl who’s a little thick? She’s overcoming an eating disorder, and can’t allow herself to get too thin. The woman you think of as “too thin?” She’s at the end of a long journey from being morbidly obese. The guy with the huge upper body and no leg development? He had no guidance when he started lifting, now he’s trying to catch up.

We all started somewhere. Be an inspiration, not a critic.
