a small sampling of my rubber duck collection

National Rubber Ducky Day!

I was on a video interview recently, and was asked this very important question: “I see four rubber duckies in your office. What’s up with those?

My answer: “You should see the Duckmada in our bathroom.”

There’s something about a rubber duck that just brings a smile to my face. Maybe it’s throwing back to childhood. Maybe it’s that they’re relatively universal – everyone has probably had at least one.

I have… quite a few. There’s at least 25 of them in the master bathroom, and I can think of at least one in the guest bath. There’s a box of “holiducks” in the linen closet that only come out for holidays and special occasions. In addition to the actual rubber duckies, there are rubber ducky Pez dispensers, rubber ducky Christmas ornaments, a rubber ducky kitchen timer, and a rubber ducky toothbrush holder. I’m sure that’s not all. They’re pretty much everywhere.

Why was January 13th chosen for this honor? According to a 1973 Sesame Street calendar, Rubber Duckie’s Birthday is January 13th. Sesame Street’s Rubber Ducky and I are also close in age – he debuted in February 1970, only three months before I “debuted.”

Celebrate this day by hanging out with your favorite rubber ducky, or post pics of your rubber ducky collection with the hashtag #NationalRubberDuckyDay.
